Sportsmen's Journal to record memories
According to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), citizen scientists have a new tool for recording their observations and measurements of wildlife: The Nevada Sportsmen's Journal.
Every year critical data is collected by sportsmen and used by NDOW to interpret the status of Nevada's game and fish populations.
Their analyses are used to make recommendations for habitat management and hunting and fishing seasons.
In the free pocket-sized journal, sportsmen can record their memories of pursuing game and fish in the state.
The Sportsmen's Journal has a hunting and an angling section with a place to record such information as species pursued, location, conditions, and harvest information.
It will be given to sportsmen purchasing licenses at NDOW offices.
HCC Collaboration Opens Doors for Non-Traditional Students
Alan Jefferson, vice president of Wachovia Small Business Capital in Baltimore, has a new title: first guinea pig. Jefferson will be the first student to work toward a bachelor's degree through a new collaboration announced in September by Howard Community College (HCC) and Albany, N.Y.-based Excelsior College.
The collaboration will enable local students to earn bachelor's degrees in business, technology, liberal arts, nursing and health sciences. Through the agreement, students can transfer up to 90 credits (or three years of a four-year degree) to Excelsior, where they can complete the remaining 30 credits required for a bachelor's through Excelsior's online courses and for-credit examinations.
Jefferson joked about his earliest forays into college. "I've never hidden the fact that, when I did my first turn at the University of Maryland College Park, I was on the dean's list three times - but it was the wrong list," he said, with a laugh.

Advertisers have had their first look at new TV ratings that track how many people stay tuned to commercials. Commercial ratings i.e. how many actually watched the commercial rather than the programme it was in - also include viewers with digital video recorders who watch ads up to three days after the initial airing. Although some ad execs were concerned about a significant drop-off between the two sets of ratings, the first batch of figures released revealed no big surprises. Commercial ratings across the five major US networks came in only slightly below live programme ratings, down 1 per cent on average among people ages 12 to 34 and among adults ages 18 to 49.
The biggest drop was among adults 50 and older, where commercial ratings were 5 per cent lower.

SIERRA VISTA — A fistfight got more violent when knives were drawn and two men were stabbed early Wednesday morning outside an east side pub, according to police.Sierra Vista police say they are looking for two men who they believe pulled the knives during the fight and stabbed the men — one man nine times — outside Paul’s Pub, 1805 Paseo San Luis, near closing time. .
