The Walkman doubles as an FM radio; you can preset your favorite stations. It comes loaded with PacMan and Ms. Pacman (my personal favorites), a pedometer, and fitness applications. Digital Cameras Camera snaps the pic between blinks It seems that most new digital cameras can automatically focus on faces - presuming that's what you're looking for in your pictures. But some cameras can catch a smile, too. GE's (ge.com/digitalcameras) E1050 (about $250) camera catches both smiles and eyeballs - it takes pictures between your subjects' blinks. The features are separate and can be turned off if they get in the way of what you're trying to accomplish. The E1050 again shows GE's knack for turning out cheap but solid cameras with monster features.
Heath Ledger was a lonesome cowboy
For most of his working life he has never explained and never complained. Ledger, on the other hand, was a victim: a young man who pushed himself too hard to live in the big time. He looked set to achieve a great career but there was something lacking. A ruthlessness, perhaps, or a thick enough skin to deal with the demands of celebrity and the publicity machines of the film studios. One of his latest roles has special relevance. Nicholson played an iconic deranged Joker in the 1989 film Batman. Ledger has delivered such a striking and frightening Joker in the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight, to be released this summer, that it easily matches the original. Michael Caine, who reprised his role as the butler in the film to Christian Bale’s Batman, told me a few months ago that it was so good it made him forget his lines.
Housebuilders rise on rate cut hopes
Sales at all of the big three housebuilders have been hit since the summer after the credit squeeze wrung the life out of the "back-to-school" autumn selling season. Housebuilders are hopeful that another cut in interest rates will kick-start the usual spring selling season. Taylor Wimpey, the merger of the old Wimpey and Taylor Woodrow companies, announced earlier this year that it would start buying back shares when its stock was trading at about 300p. The prospect of possible cheaper money helped Alliance & Leicester, up 6p to 641p. Moody's, the rating agency, yesterday put the high street bank's financial strength rating and long-term bank deposite ratings on review for a possible downgrade because it is paying more for funds in the money markets. Shares in the media group Trinity Mirror eased 0.2 per cent to 337.75p on news that it was to start a £175 million ($353 million) share buyback programme following clearance from the pensions regulator for a return of capital to shareholders.
OTA launches first professional financial training center in UAE
'The U.S. Consulate is pleased to welcome OTA to Knowledge Village and to Dubai and the U.A.E. In our increasingly globalized world, the demand for quality international education programs is skyrocketing. OTA has rightly seized that opportunity, and we look forward to helping it flourish here,' said Peter Neisuler, Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Consulate. Online Trading Academy™ has conducted financial and active trading training since 1997. From its headquarters in Irvine, California, the company has established and progressively developed live classes and online mentoring as its core curriculum in teaching its courses to active self-directed investors and traders. Its teaching methods evolved from the company's roots as one of the largest trading floors in the world with 180 traders who were trading over half a billion dollars of securities daily.
the has-been
For such a confused party, Fred Thompson seems like a knight in shining loafers. Not only can he play the tough guy in Tom Clancy movies, he's the affable D.A. on "Law & Order" – the show Michael Kinsley famously called "The Secret Vice of Power Women." Conservatives pushing Thompson's candidacy routinely tout his crossover appeal. In a glowing column last month, former Wall Street Journal editorial editor John Fund wrote, "Fan blogs for 'Law and Order' note that since the show is especially popular among women, a Thompson race could help close the GOP's 'gender gap.'" The "Law & Order" vote is more contested than you might think. If Michael Bloomberg doesn't run, Thompson's co-star Sam Waterston could win the nomination for the independent Unity08 ticket. Waterston's predecessor, Michael Moriarty, says he is running for president as a Libertarian.
IT Dept unearths income of Rs 11.75 crore
In a similar action in Jalandhar initiated against a marble outlet and real estate dealer, a surrender of unaccounted income to the extent of Rs 1.26 crore was made by the assessee, she said. Yet another survey operation of a newly constructed marriage palace at Jalandhar revealed glaring discrepancies with respect to investment made in the property. When confronted, the assessee declared an additional income of Rs 1.25 crore for taxation. The CCIT said the Income Tax Department had conducted a survey at Khanna in May this year in which a concealed income of Rs 6 crore was surrendered by the assessee and additional tax liability was accepted. Ms Sahwney urged the business community, professionals and other individuals to file their income tax returns, disclosing their true income.
Afghan Impasse
It may be cold in the Hindu Kush at this time of year, but there are plenty of reasons for the Taleban's commanders to be cheerful. They have lost control of Musa Qala, but Hamid Karzai has nonetheless chosen to criticise the British Forces who retook it. Many of the other nations in the coalition backing President Karzai operate according to their own rules to no clearly defined purpose. The biggest coalition member, the United States, has questioned publicly its partners' skill and commitment to fighting the insurgency, and, with better co-ordination of the coalition's efforts critically urgent, the man the UN trusted to deliver it has turned down the job. Opium production, meanwhile, is at a record high. With Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon no longer in contention, the only certainty about the unenviable post of UN envoy to Afghanistan is who will leave it.
