Blind-school Scout earns Eagle rank
I really can't wait to actually get my Eagle certification," said Aaron, a junior who navigates with a cane. "I can go and say, 'Look what I've been able to accomplish through Scouts.' " Aaron expects his Eagle rank to be a steppingstone to bigger goals -- being admitted to what he considers a "high end" college, such as Bellarmine University, and starting his own troop. "People know what it took to get Eagle," he said. He has fulfilled all the Eagle requirements, with some accommodations for his disability. For example, he was exempted from earning the swimming, hiking or cycling badge -- Eagle Scouts are supposed to get at least one of them -- because he has weak muscles and some other health difficulties stemming from his premature birth. But he substituted another badge, earning 22 merit badges in all -- one more than required.
99X's demise means loss of unique Atlanta lifestyle
Much has been written about the demise of the Morning X, which had been one of Atlanta's most popular radio shows in its heyday. But little has been said about my favorite show — Organic X — with a 7:30 a.m. to noon timeslot on Sundays. Rarely did a Sunday go by without me tuning into the show. I would take my portable radio with headphones to listen to the station as I rode my bicycle around the park, walked the dogs in a nearby nature preserve or worked out at the gym. As of Friday, I couldn't find out the fate of Organic X. But given the recent decisions of relatively new owner Cumulus Radio, I have little hope the show will survive on air. Since Cumulus bought the station two years ago, my children and I felt change coming. One of our favorites — Jimmy Baron — went off the air.
High schools to implement new rigorous standards
I think it will help in the long run," said Mercedes Guzman, El Paso Independent School District high school science facilitator. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board this week approved college readiness standards that outline what knowledge and skills high school students need to be successful in college or on the job. In 2005, legislators passed a law that required higher education and public school agencies to align their standards so that when Texas students graduate from high school, they are prepared for their next step. Studies showed that many Texas students needed remedial courses before they could take college-level classes, and business leaders complained that graduates weren't ready for work. A report released last year by Gov. Rick Perry's Commission for a College Ready Texas indicated that half of all Texas college freshmen had to take remedial courses, compared to 28 percent of students nationwide.
