No chips, no cards,no dealer - pokergoes high-tech

The Casino du Lac-Leamy is unveiling 12 electronic poker tables on Friday that it hopes will draw players to a renovated rear section of the Gatineau casino.

But there are a few things missing from this high-tech version of the popular card game: there are no live dealers and there aren't any paper cards.

Virtual poker hands are "dealt" to players who will place a bet, raise, check or fold by touching a small computer screen. Instead of holding their cards close to their chests, players will find themselves cupping one hand over a lighted screen to privately view their cards.

Fred Dicker Spitzer's Nemesis

Memo to politicians: If you think media scrutiny is tough in New York City, try Albany.

A year ago Eliot Spitzer, the most feared man on Wall Street as New York's attorney general, became the state's governor. After a landslide victory, and with an adoring media trailing him from Manhattan, Mr. Spitzer arrived in Albany.

That's when he became eligible for coverage by one Fredric U. Dicker, state editor for the New York Post. (The Post is owned by News Corp., which owns Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones & Co.) A veteran of more than two decades covering state politics, Mr. Dicker had tormented Republican Gov. George Pataki. So perhaps Mr. Spitzer, a Democrat, expected more favorable treatment. Perhaps he thought that kind words from Mr. Dicker during the campaign signaled a permanent ally.

Experts say impact of recession could be minimal, but that's not ...

Huntington might have seen some local impact in this area with the announcement that the SNE plant, which produces windows for homes, is shutting down in May, costing hundreds their jobs.

But Wilkins said it is more tied to mortgage investments, and speculators not knowing what they had in their portfolios.

"It's surprising to me that the sub-prime mortgage thing got as out-of-control as it did," he said.

Wilkins explained that as the housing market grew, it began to draw interest from speculators, who bought up bundles of mortgages from banks as investments. But many of those mortgages were sub-prime loans, meaning they had been issued to borrowers who were at higher risk of not being able to make their housing payments, leading to foreclosure.

"What they did, is they created slices, and, in the lowest slices, they had some really sub-prime stuff," Wilkins said.

Ward Churchill Fired

Churchill was upbeat during the news conference, which also featured Native American drumming and chanting by supporters.

In an interview Tuesday night after the vote, Brown, the system president, said that the evidence against Churchill for scholarly misconduct was overwhelming. "I think it was the depth of the falsification that ultimately led to the outcome," Brown said. "It wasn’t just one or two or three or four, but numerous incidents of intentional falsification," such that Brown believed that in the end board members "felt like they didn’t have a choice."

Brown, who was present for the board’s discussions with Churchill and the faculty panel that reviewed the case, but not for the deliberations, said that board members seemed focused not on the question of Churchill’s guilt, but of the punishment.
