The Birth of the 'Voice': 1955–1965
Whitney North Seymour, Jr., local Republican candidate for the Assembly, broke the story that Edmond Martin, Village realtor, had placed a sign in his office saying that he would not show apartments to Negroes because of his opposition to the Sharkey-Brown-Isaacs law. Within three days 30 of Mr. Martin's tenants signed a statement of fundamental opposition to his stand . . . "As tenants of Edmond Martin, we wish to state that we are opposed to such flouting of the law and to the principle of placing supposed property rights over human rights. Our sense of dignity is not injured by living in the same building with our fellow-men of whatever race, creed, or color, for we welcome that. On the contrary, our sense of dignity is outraged by being forced to live in discriminatory housing." Perhaps the most impressive thing about the tenant response was its wide support.

To trade securities known as equity index futures. These are effectively bets on the future direction of country stockmarket indices such as France’s CAC 40 and Germany’s DAX, the equivalent of the FTSE 100 in Britain. In theory most if not all his trading should have been low-risk and low-margin because he was an arbitrageur, exploiting tiny differentials in the prices of the same securities in different marketplaces, or he was placing hedges to offset risk taken by other traders. He was only allowed to have a total exposure (the most the bank could lose) of €20 million at any one time. What happened in practice? From January 6 Kerviel started taking huge bets that share markets would go up. Instead, they fell, and continued to fall, and the more they fell, the more his losses on paper mushroomed.
Scottrade Bank Moves Forward, Two New Executives Join Management Team
ST. LOUIS -- Scottrade, a leading branch-supported online investment firm, announces the addition of George Horn and Rodney Stanley to the Scottrade Bank management team. In November, Scottrades application for a thrift charter was approved by the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS). Initially, the bank will be used as part of a program to transfer brokerage customers cash balances into FDIC-insured deposit accounts. Over time, Scottrade expects to broaden its product offerings to include traditional retail banking products and services, such as online checking and savings accounts and certificates of deposit. Now that we have received OTS approval, we expect to begin the initial phase of our banking operations in the first quarter of 2008, said Joseph Pope, Scottrade Bank President.

Are increased income tax rates an appropriate means to that end, or are there more efficient ways to go about sharing the surplus? It's all well and good to propose a stronger safety net, but one must also discuss how to pay for it, and what effects a payment scheme may have on the incentives of investors and innovators in the economy. Next, we must determine the best methods for downward redistribution, with a keen eye to incentive structures. Wage subsidies and unemployment insurance are attractive policy options, but the ultimate goal must be to increase the size of the skilled workforce relative to unskilled workers. As Mr Krugman states, "[H]ighly educated workers in the United States benefit from higher wages and expanded job opportunities because of trade." Investing in policies to enlarge the proportion of highly educated workers in America must become a high priority.
2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Review
It's not particularly unusual in my business for a scheduled test car to become unavailable. Press fleet vehicles lead a hard and high-mileage life, and so are exposed to the hazards of the road to a greater degree than most others. Only taxicabs may lead a harsher life. The usual last-minute replacement is a bare-bones, bottom-feeder subcompact economy car or a soon-to-be-discontinued (for good reason) loser. I figured turkey season was coming early, and asked what the replacement might be. "A Corvette Z06, until Friday" said the voice on the other end of the line. "That'll work fine," I replied, with a large grin on my face. A Corvette Z06 is a subcompact hatchback, technically, if you consider passenger space. But in spirit, any Corvette, and especially the ultra-high performance Z06, is something else entirely.
Big interview: Brad Gilbert
Motivator, shot mechanic, tactical guru, friend, confidant, disciplinarian, occasional surrogate big brother, highly paid skivvy, verbal punchbag? I’d love to be asking that question of Andy Murray and Andy Roddick. Better still, perhaps I should ask Brad Gilbert and Jimmy Connors, their respective new coaches." "And what did I say?" he asks. "You asked me to explain what a skivvy was, then you said, ‘Well, if you’re a highly paid skivvy, you are not a coach’." "Yes, that’s it. A coach should wear different hats; some days you’re a friend, some days a tactician, some days a strategist, but the important thing is that you should have a predetermined thought of what you need to be." "Do you want me to put that in?" I ask.
