| So Efficient, L.E.D.’s Are Now Fashion Plates, Too
Sielaff said, also take up less space and give designers more flexibility in placing them. The R8 lights are made by Automobile Lighting, a division of Magneti Marelli, a leading auto parts supplier based in Italy. The Audi A5 coupe and the newest A4 have different arrangements of L.E.D.'s, more tubular in shape. "Each car needs a personality with lights," Mr. Sielaff said. "I have an expert team doing nothing but light design. You do not just draw a pretty curve and see if it can be built. It takes working with engineers who know light itself, and the manufacturer of the lights and so on." The first practical light-emitting diode, which was red, was developed in 1962 by Nick Holonyak Jr., an electronics professor who wanted to make a transistor do something he could see.

Just Say “No” — Again — to Goleta General Plan Amendments
In 2006, a new Goleta City Council majority was elected, in part based on their claims that Goleta's General Plan did not reflect the true wishes of Goleta residents and that it had to be changed. Early in 2007, the city's planning staff was authorized to conduct a process to “open up" the General Plan to consider amendments originated mostly by land owners, developers, and special interest groups. The council allocated more than $350,000 for staff support and workshops for public input, plus environmental analysis. Since then, the public's input has shattered the notion that there is discontent with the current plan, as the information below illustrates. It is time to move on. Over the course of five public workshops during this past summer and fall, staff presented 77 potential amendments to the General Plan, including 33 proposed by the Bacara Resort.
VIDEO: MRSA alert at the Royal Bolton Hospital
HOSPITAL chiefs have declared war on killer superbugs. Their bid to wipe out MRSA and Clostridium Difficile (C-difficile) will see all new patients screened for the infections from April. Carpets in all public areas will be ripped out and replaced with tiles. And hundreds of chairs, currently used by patients and visitors in public areas, will be replaced. The plans were unveiled as Health Secretary Alan Johnson announced the Government was to invest millions of pounds in infection control in the NHS. David Fillingham, chief executive of the Bolton Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "We are delighted the Department of Health is putting yet more impetus on reducing infection rates. We have already made great strides in Bolton, particularly in reducing C-difficile.
Radio Talk
When Al Gore proposed launching a progressive TV network, a Fox News executive told Advertising Age (10/13/03): "The problem with being associated as liberal is that they wouldn't be going in a direction that advertisers are really interested in…. If you go out and say that you are a liberal network, you are cutting your potential audience, and certainly your potential advertising pool, right off the bat." (See Extra!, 11-12/03: http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=2595) FAIR's call to the ABC contact person listed on the memo, to ask if similar "blackout" lists exist for other shows, including conservative-leaning programs, has not been returned. FAIR, the national media watch group, has been offering well-documented criticism of media bias and censorship since 1986.
