LaBarca fights WICC for radio show title

Cumulus Media submitted its application for a service mark on "Italian House Party," on Dec. 27, 2007, and received a certificate of registration from the secretary of the state 15 days later. Cumulus' certificate of registration expires on Dec. 27, 2012.

According to Cumulus' application, the mark is intended for "promotion and publicity," and the first place it was ever used was in Connecticut on Nov. 1, 1989.

In response to a question on the state's application, Linda McCarthy, WICC's business manager, states the mark "appears on signs, in print advertising and online advertising" and that "no" applications to register the mark or any portions of it have been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The Commercial Recording Division form also asks applicants to confirm "to the best of the applicant's knowledge, no other person has the right to use such mark in this state either in the identical form or as to be likely to cause confusion or to cause mistake or deceive purchasers."

Lastly, the certificate of registration requires the applicant to declare "under the penalties of false statement" that the statements made in the application are true.

In 2001, my longtime dream of owning a community-serving business was realized when, without any retail or bookselling experience, I purchased the Brown Study Bookshop, a sleepy used-book store in Point Reyes Station. I soon came to learn the realities of owning a small independent business in an age when consumers, seeking the best deal, are drawn to purchasing goods online and in big-box stores.
The last two decades have brought sweeping changes in many American communities as strip malls, big-box retailers, and e-commerce replace the locally owned shops on Main Street. Nationally, the number of independent bookstores alone has fallen from 4,700 in 1993 to 2,500 today, as revenues from Internet book sales climbed from $2.6 billion in 2002 to $4 billion in 2006. Describing the mega-corporate takeover in The Great Unraveling: Losing Our Way in the New Century, David Korten writes, "unlike the owners of locally based businesses, the absentee shareholder owners of these new businesses have little knowledge or concern for the consequences at the local level for action taken on behalf of the corporation."

In contrast, a growing movement of independent businesses is creating "local living economies" and seeking a "living return"-one partially paid by the benefits of living and working in healthy, vibrant communities.

On Aug. 2, online sports gamblers wagered $7 million on a tennis match in Poland. Stunningly, the money favored 87th-ranked Martin Vassallo Argüello, even after the Argentine lost the first set. Suspicious that the fix was in, the Internet gambling site Betfair voided the bets and alerted the Association of Tennis Professionals. Those reservations seemed justified when top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko quit in the third set, citing an ailing toe. In the wake of that fishy match, multiple tennis players have admitted they've been asked to fix results. Along with exposing the seamy side of pro tennis, the scandal has also spotlighted the site that handled the action. Most Americans probably haven't heard of Betfair, but it's the biggest thing going in global gambling.

Betfair, which opened for business in 2000, is best described as day trading for sports bettors.

Textbooks Enter the Digital Era

The chapter on acceleration, for example, has animated races between a tortoise and a hare, illustrating the principle. Jacobsen argues that the latest generations of E-books do more than merely electronically post the text of an existing book; they create a new model for teaching the material.

Generation text. The educational appeal of these digital textbooks-that they incorporate diverse tools into a single volume-also is confirming for some professors that it could be time to move away from the idea of a central course text altogether. Prof. Diane Ebert-May, who teaches plant biology at Michigan State University, says she hasn't used textbooks in her classroom for years-not even for majors. Instead, her students get a series of readings that address different topics. "Biology changes so rapidly that most of the readings in my class are not much older than 2004," she says.

A white-knuckle week in markets

When Ben Bernanke, head of the US Federal Reserve, arrived at his Washington office early last Monday morning, the mood could scarcely have been bleaker. In the previous few days, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo and Citigroup had announced a further round of write-offs running into billions of dollars - on top of those they had disclosed in the autumn.

Figures suggested that American industry was heading for a sharp downturn. In Europe, surveys of companies were almost as downbeat. And perhaps most importantly, Ambac, the world’s largest bond insurer - a company that insures against the risk that debts turn sour – had seen its credit rating slashed.

Stock markets across Asia and Europe had already plummeted on Monday. The FTSE 100 index was suffering its largest one-day points fall since it was created in 1983 – probably aggravated, as later became clear, by Société Générale’s efforts to unwind huge positions taken out by rogue trader Jerome Kerviel.

Don't vote for socialism

Many want government interference in climate control, energy production, auto manufacturing. The list goes on. Hillary Clinton has a goal to limit "talk radio." The other major Democratic candidates have the same kind of ideas in their heads.

Financial Information and News

On Saturday Ms Munn went to the KEMH and had a chat with members of the Social Welfare Department. As a former Social Welfare professional, Ms Munn holds a great interest in social issues. She expressed amazement that the Falklands provide a whole range of services while having the population of a small village in the UK. Prior to leaving on Saturday's LAN flight Ms Munn held a press conference at Government House with FINN, Penguin News and FIRS.

Ms Munn said that she found it interesting to come to the Falklands, especially her impression of the Islands' beauty and huge land area. "I am amazed how a small population manages in relation to a whole range of issues," she said as she explained how she met various members of the Government, Business community and Islanders. She mention some of the issues as flights, access issues, relationship with Argentina as well as the constitutional review not going on here in the Falklands as well as other Overseas Territories. "I am very please to hear that the discussions have gone so well," she said.

"We are very keen on being able to run and manage their own lives but within the context of our responsibilities as Government. We are very clear that it is a matter of self determination for people on the Islands and that they want to remain British," she continued. "People felt rightly proud about the unique wildlife and conservation and I think it's the kind of thing that strikes you immediately," she said.
