| How to avoid a professional negligence claim
Solicitors can learn several lessons from last year on how to avoid being accused of professional negligence. One of 2007’s hot topics was money laundering. The case of Attorney General Republic of Zambia v Meer Care & Desai provided an insight into this dark area of criminality and negligence. It also made fascinating reading for those interested in the corruption of officialdom. The claim arose from an alleged conspiracy to defraud the Zambian government of around $46 million. Meer Care & Desai, a UK-based law firm, was one of the defendants. The firm was accused of participating in the conspiracy by providing dishonest assistance to the Zambian-based defendants, allegedly by receiving and paying illegal funds in and out of its client accounts. The court accepted that a breach of the Solicitors Accounts Rules and money laundering regulations did not in itself determine dishonesty.
Miami Heat unit sues ticket resellers, claiming violation of license ...
The Miami Heat-owned company that operates AmericanAirlines Arena is suing an online ticketing company and the Florida Association of Ticket Brokers, claiming they are illegally reselling premium seats to basketball games.
Basketball Properties Ltd. claims in its suit filed last month in Miami-Dade Circuit Court that Tickets of America knowingly resold the most exclusive seats at the arena but disguised their locations to skirt the Heat's license agreements with premium-seat ticket buyers.
The suit says those agreements prohibit patrons in the flagship lounge, starbox, suite and loge box seats from reselling their tickets through a third party and allows those resales only through TicketExchange, operated by Ticketmaster on the team's Web site. Through TicketExchange, patrons can resell their tickets at any price, but after Ticketmaster charges a fee, the seller and the Heat split the rest of the sales price.

'People thought I was insane'
He simply wasn't happy as an actor, and it's the thing he has been most ruthless about forgetting. Intriguingly, though, some of his greatest successes as a director, notably Othello, and his riveting production of Don Carlos in the West End in 2005, have been with plays he once acted in, plays he thinks he was "too young to appreciate". He made the switch to directing in 1995, choosing for his first production Arthur Miller's The Last Yankee because, with only four actors and essentially one act, it wouldn't overwhelm him with technical difficulties. He enjoyed himself so much that he instantly abandoned acting - though that may have had something to do with the fact that he met his partner, the designer Christopher Oram, on that production. Their first meeting, says Grandage, was "perfectly lovely, but not significant".
