Come clean on criminal teachers

Sadly, the same level of public accountability does not apply to 128 new classroom teachers with criminal records who have been hired for government schools.

The public - in particular parents of the children in these schools - have every right to know the backgrounds of these teachers entrusted with the care of young students.

In six months between November 2006 and May last year 263 applicant teachers in NSW were found during screening checks to have criminal pasts - and almost half of them were given a job.

But under an agreement with the criminal history checking agency CrimTrac, all teachers' police files are destroyed by the department after 180 days.

The reasons advanced for this extraordinary secrecy - protection of teachers' privacy and fears that publicising details could prejudice the flow of personal information to departmental chiefs - just do not wash.

Detainee file was overseen by 'Tiger Team'

A specially created team of military officers played a key role in severely limiting what the Canadian public was allowed to know about the country's role in Afghanistan.

Originally created to assist an investigation into the treatment of detainees in Afghanistan, the new team – codenamed Tiger Team – quickly came to scrutinize virtually every public access to information request dealing with the Afghan mission, according to documents obtained by The Globe and Mail.

In effect, the team added an extra layer of scrutiny to the access to information process, making it so complicated that an access to information official eventually described it as "convoluted."

The added scrutiny also caused many delays in responding to requests, as access to information officers struggled to understand the new system at a time when the government faced harsh criticism over the treatment of detainees.

I'm Not Offended, I'm Just Bored: Why Gaming Journalism Should Stop ...

Women may play as many games as men, but the problem isn't with games here, it's with gaming journalism, and men are still the primary consumer. Check the comments section in Kotaku if you want. A closer comparison might be the auto industry. Both women and men buy cars, but when it comes to auto enthusiasts, most are male. That's why you still see barely-clothed models slathered all over cars at auto shows and on magazine covers.

I don't like it either, but I can't blame gaming journalism for pandering to the audience of gaming journalism, not games in general.

American Standard closes

The nation's housing slowdown forced American Standard Building Systems to close Friday, eliminating the jobs of 57 full-time employees and 23 temporary workers.

“The doors are closed," said Phil Murphy, corporate controller.

In a release, officials said the decision to close the plant on Commerce Court in Martinsville was made with a heavy heart.

“... It is with great sadness that the ownership and management of American Standard must announce the closing and termination of all operations as of Friday, Jan. 25," the release states.

“This action is the result of the crash in the housing market which began in early 2007," it added.

According to the Associated Press, the government reported last week that construction of new homes fell by 24.8 percent in 2007, the second biggest decline on record, exceeded only by a 26 percent plunge in 1980.

So long lab rats? Researchers seek animal test alternative

Goldberg notes that the movements toward in vitro and away from animal testing is incremental _ even optimistic assessments measure progress in decades. But he still believes there may well be a day when the lab rat becomes a thing of the past.

"At some time in the far future my suspicion is yes," he said, "because were doing it stepwise by stepwise."

Speed bump in Renshaw's title run

If I can get through today and still be within striking distance at the top of the climb, there's no reason why I can't hang on to the jersey.

"The plan is for me to be within one minute of the top climbers who are expected to be the first over Willunga, but that's if I have a couple of riders to help me. We've also got Simon Gerrans who could figure in a stage win.

"There's still 20km to go to the finish after the climb, which is a fair distance for the bunch to regroup at the front, but the problem is that it seems my team doesn't have too many friends in the peloton."

The hard-luck story of the day belonged to Matt Hayman, the Canberra rider and one of three Australians in the Dutch Rabobank outfit.

While still in contention for overall honours, he was knocked off his bike when travelling at 65km/h after being head-butted by Team Milram rival Elia Rigotto inside the final 300m of another bunch sprint finish at Strathalbyn.

Sales LKR 283.7 mn

Well, well, very interesting reading all the comments. I am one of the lucky ones who was put on an UL flight to Melbourne in 1993 by off loading a poor passenger. I can tell you that I was not proud of it but, shows how things were done in those days.

I am glad to hear that the person in charge who declined the president stood up for the fare paying passengers. Unfortunately he may have lost his job but he can feel proud of what he did. UL is doing well at the moment, hope the government of SL wont stuff things up. .
